Book Title: Ten Bears in a Bed
Author: John Richardson
Illustrator: John Richardson
Why did you choose this book?
The book is easy to understand, appropriate for the age level, and helps further the goal of teaching children their numbers. This particular book was a childhood book of mine so I was familiar with the book.
Utah State Standard:
Counting/Numbers
Objective (s):
Teach children their numbers, associate the idea of a number with a visual (such as marshmallows) and associate the idea of a number with the written number.
Materials:
Each group of 2-4 needs 1 dice, 30 marshmallows each student, paper for each student, and a cup to keep the marshmallows in.
Background for Teachers:
Students will want to learn the concept because they are only able to eat what they understand. They will feel that it is a game rather than an assignment.
Intended Learning Outcomes: (same as objectives)
Children will understand their numbers and associate things in everyday life with numbers. They will better grasp the concept.
Instructional Procedures:
Demonstrate how to play the game. Separate the children into groups if they are able to work independently.
The game is over when all 30 marshmallows (or other small candy) has been eaten.
Family Connections: (take home activity)
Encourage the students to play this game with their parents. Any food or small toy can be used to practice the concept.
Assessment Plan: (how do you plan to assess whether or not students gained the skill/concept?)
Through group learning projects, I would assess the understanding of each student. By offering a chance for each student to show what they have learned through example, I will be able to see their grasp of the concept.
(Jason, how many pens do I have? Can you come point to the number on the board for me? Is Jason right everyone? Good job, Jason!)
