Assessment of Student Learning
As a teacher, I will assess my student’s learning through several different ways. First, through regular written assessments, such as quizzes. Second, through assignments, such as papers and oral presentations. Third, through classroom participation.
I will provide students with mini quizzes after each week of information is given. For example, if we are reading a book and the assignment for the students is to read the first 5 chapters during that week, I would give the students a small quiz, such as a 5 question quiz, to test their learning and if they completed the reading assignment. Also, I will give large tests based on all the information that is learned during a certain topic.
By giving these quizzes and tests, I will be able to see who is doing their assignments, learning the material, understanding and retaining the information, and is progressing in the course. If they are consistently scoring poorly on quizzes and tests, I would take the time to work with them to see if we can break through the learning barrier.
I will give students assignments on a regular basis. Since I am looking forward to being an English teacher, the majority of my assignments will be reading and writing assignments. I will give students reading assignments on books that we are reading as a class. Also, I will assign writing assignments based on those books that we have read. Sometimes, there may be an additional oral presentation that I will assign to students. By giving a variety of assignments, I will be able to understand a students grasp on the material. They will have a chance to read the material, write a paper on it and present the information orally.
A student who is understanding the content of a course is usually happy to be in class and actively participates. By watching the students who answer questions on a regular basis, I will be able to determine who is understanding the content. If a student is always leaning over to ask their neighbor questions, chances are they need a little extra help to learn the course material.
There are many different ways to teach material so students can understand it. There are also many different ways to test if they are understanding the material. I think the most important part of this cycle is ensure that if a student is having difficulties, it is caught and corrected early.
