Philosophy of Managing a Classroom
As a teacher, providing a stimulating, safe and comfortable classroom environment is key to maximizing student opportunities for learning. In this statement, I will provide my strategies for establishing and maintaining a well-structured environment to optimize the experiences for students.
To make the room stimulating and inviting, I will decorate it with different book covers and quotes from my favorite books. I will show examples of student work or photographs from great learning experiences. I will do my best to make them tie in with the context that is being taught and not distract from the overall feeling of the classroom.
In order to make the class feel like a family environment and create a comfortable experience for all students, I will start by having students create name cards that will be displayed on their desk so I can learn their name and they can learn about each other. Then, I will have a get to know you session – instead of one person standing in front of the class, it will be a speed-dating type environment where a person has a few minutes to learn about another person and then there will be a quiz afterwards.
At the beginning of the year, I will set clear standards for my expectations and rules for the students. I will require a contract be signed by the parents and the students for the expectations of the class. I want everyone to understand that learning cannot take place unless everyone is willing to promote it. The contract will create the best environment for everyone in the classroom, and also set out expectations of what will be the consequence if an assignment is late or a classroom activity is missed.
I will do my best to explain what is required of students from day one. I will provide a sheet of all assignments, their due dates, and the points you can earn. I will make sure that students are set up for success and the only way they can fail is if they don’t participate and pay attention.
To summarize, the goal of my classroom will be to create a positive environment for learning, a safe environment for the student to grow, and a comfortable environment for a student to ask questions. I want each student to learn and succeed and will do my best to make that a reality.
